The Maha Shivaratri festival will be conducted on 6 March 2027 on Sunday. Maha Shivaratri is a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to the lunar-solar month of the Hindu calendar, Shivaratri falls on the 13th night/14th day of the month, which results in different dates every year (February/March).
Maha Shivaratri is the great festival celebrating lord Shiva’s power. People believe that fasting on this night and offering prayers to Lord Shiva will bring them good luck in their life. During this festival, lots of people from all over the world come to Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.

Devotees have only one meal on the day of Tridashi, before Shivaratri fast. On Shivaratri day, they complete the morning ritual, promise Sankalpa and strictly fast during the whole day. Sankalpa means that the devotees promise self-determination during the fasting period and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva to fast without any interference to end it successfully.
Devotees have a bath in Bagmati holy river in Pashupatinath. They take a second bath in the evening before going to Shiva Puja or to temple. They break their fast by worshipping Shiva at night and take a bath on the next day.

To get the maximum benefit from fasting, devotees must fast from sunrise to the end of Chaturdashi Tithi. According to contradictory opinions, devotees should break their fast only after the end of Chaturdashi. But there is a belief that both Shiva Puja and Paran breaking the fast should be done within fourteen days.
