Indra Jatra is a regional holiday in Kathmandu Valley. This holiday falls on the 15th day of the 11th month of the Nepali calendar. The eight-days-long joyous festival among the Newari community in Kathmandu Valley honors those who have recently passed away and pays homage to the Hindu god Indra and his mother Dagini, to ensure blessings of the harvest to come.
Lord Indra incarnates god of rain, which makes very important deity in Hindu communities where a successful harvest is important.
Behind the story: it is said that lord Indra in a human form, visited Kathmandu Valley to get a flower which his mother wanted to use in a ritual. He was arrested for picking flowers and stealing. To ease the situation Dagini descended from heaven and when she found out that her hostage was Indra, he was immediately released. Dagini said she would like to thank the people for releasing her son and ensure that to compensate for Indra crime, those who died last year would be taken to heaven. The forms basis of Indra Jatra means Chad kumari, by pulling a chariot every year.

The festival includes a virgin, called Kumari. Since a thousand years according to an old tradition, these young girls are selected as living goddesses at the age of three. Virgins are only allowed to go out of the house during major festivals like Indra Jatra. When they participate, their feet are not allowed to touch the ground, so they must be carried or have to walk on a special carpet. When virgins reach puberty, they return to normal life as bleeding reflects their human nature. This means that if they bleed even after an accidental cut, they stop being virgins.
Two boys playing the roles of Ganesh and Bhairab, as on most feared form of Shiva, accompany the virgin to the procession to the royal palace, where stops in front of Bhairab 12-foot mask. As shown above, Bhairav will only be showned to public during Indra Jatra, performed in public festival .
